I’ll Be Back In a Jiffy

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while — I’ll be back very shortly with some comments on the Tim Langdell EDGE thing. (I just moved apartments and I don’t have internet at home right now, hopefully I can compose a post tonight.)

At the rate we’re going will there even be an organisation worth joining by the time you intend to stand?

Perhaps the more urgent question is, have we already reached that point.

    @ Paul Sinnett, Dave Weinstein
I wouldn’t jump to dire conclusions about the future of the IGDA as an organization based on a few recent controversies. The IGDA is not the board of directors, the IGDA is the sum of its members, of which the BoD is just a very small fraction. Its true strength, as I have seen it, lies in the chapters and its ability to bring the game development community closer.

The actions of lack thereof of a very few high-profile members of the organization does not change that, even if they are making mistakes.

Regardless of recent controversies regarding individuals within the organization, the worth of the IGDA is still unquestionable.

The chapters have been historically almost entirely unrelated to the international organization. They are self-organized, self-funded, and have had generally functioned only to the extent that there is a committed local core willing to run them.

For that matter, some of the chapters are older than the IGDA itself.

I would not use the chapters as proof of the merits of the core organization.
